Parabens- Are these currently in your skin and hair care products?

🌿 Healthy Home, Healthy Body is the saying lately, right?!? 🌿

How is everyone doing right now? Chris and I are so fortunate that we have always worked from home. The idea of social distancing is nothing new to us. Sometimes, we would go weeks where the only interaction with the outside world, is our beloved FedEx guys and gals. If you would like to see a post about how to stay productive in these rough times, feel free to let me know in the comments below!

Okay, we’re not going to talk about the toxic stuff EVERY day. We are going to get to some good stuff and reviews in some posts to come! But, I do think it’s important to cover some of the big ones that we want to avoid FIRST, just to give us a base. I don’t know about you, but I’m a “why” or “science” person. I need to know WHY I should avoid something before I’ll make the effort to do so! So today, let’s talk a little bit about parabens.πŸ‘Š

You may or may not have heard of parabens! When you turn it over and read the label, you may see words like “ethylparaben”, “methylparaben”, “propylparaben”, and others! Just know that they are all within the classification of parabens! πŸ€“

So what are Parabens? They are a synthetic preservative that you’ll find in things like cosmetics, some foods, pharmaceuticals, and a lot of personal care products such as lotions, shampoos, conditioners, body washes, soaps, etc. Their purpose is to make it so that your products can last for YEARS on a store shelf or in your home! 😡

So WHY would you want to avoid parabens? Let’s go there. Well, first of all, they’re estrogen-mimicking, meaning they act like estrogen in the body, and are linked to increased rates of cancer, specifically breast. Something else to consider is that parabens are absorbed through the epidermis…aka your skin! We used to think that our bodies were easily able to metabolize and excrete these chemicals, but now we know that they actually bioaccumulate in yo BOD! They can wreak havoc on your endocrine system (so think HORMONES, metabolism, fertility, blood sugar regulation, etc.). 😱😱😱

Okay all you lovely people- I know this was a lot of info, but it wasn’t exhaustive. But, I know that at some point, your eyes glaze over and you can’t take in any more info! So, I would encourage you to look even deeper into the topic of parabens! Just a simple search will uncover a TON of articles out there.

GOOD NEWS! ALL of YL’s personal care products (and they have allllll the skincare, cosmetics, lotions, body butters, body washes, shampoos, conditioners, etc. that you need!) and they’re ALL Paraben- free πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

WHO here already knew about parabens? If so, have you taken steps to avoid them in your personal care products? If this is new news to you, how do you think this might affect your purchasing from here on out?
